Position: Activity Director

The Activities Director (Director of Therapeutic Recreation) assumes administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for developing and overseeing a therapeutic activities program. This program is designed to meet the needs, interests, and functional abilities of residents, thereby enhancing their self-esteem and overall well-being. The TR Director manages the Recreation Department per the facility's philosophy and ensures compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. They collaborate with the Resident Services Director and Nursing Home Administrator to allocate resources efficiently and economically, ensuring that each resident achieves optimal physical, mental, and psycho-social well-being.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Department Management:

Manage the Recreation Department, ensuring activities comply with Federal and State regulations, facility policies, and professional standards. Establish goals to enhance recreation opportunities and the quality of life for residents.

Team Leadership:

Provide oversight, feedback, and on-site training to Recreation staff and interdisciplinary team members. Foster their development to improve their ability to serve the residents.

Resident Assessment:

Conduct assessments and gather information from residents, family members, and legal representatives to design individualized activity programs that meet residents' functional levels, needs, and interests.

Plan of Care:

Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop, implement, and evaluate residents’ care plans. Ensure that activities interventions are included in the comprehensive care plan and attend care conferences.

Activity Programming:

Develop and provide individual, group, and bedside activities that reflect the interests of the residents, scheduled at times convenient for them (morning, afternoon, evening, and weekends). Ensure a variety of activities appeal to different age groups and genders and take place in different locations, including special and seasonal events. Post a monthly activities calendar.

Cognitive & Physical Support:

Adapt activities to the needs of cognitively impaired residents, providing structured programs such as music events, motor games, or outdoor walks. Ensure activities are accessible by segmenting them into simple steps and providing prompts or assistance when needed.

In-Room Activities:

Offer personalized in-room activities for residents confined to their rooms, reflecting life-long interests (e.g., music, reading) with staff assistance where necessary.

Resident Preferences:

Identify and incorporate residents’ choices, preferences, and functional capacities into the activities program. Communicate these approaches to direct care staff.

Resident Assistance:

Assist residents in getting to and from activities. Ensure the safety of residents by using gait belts and other safety measures when necessary.

Documentation & Quality Assurance:

Maintain accurate and thorough progress notes in residents’ clinical records, ensuring completeness and accuracy. Perform quality assessment and assurance tasks, such as daily compliance rounds, reviewing records, and conducting interviews with residents, staff, and families. Address performance issues in the Recreation staff and take corrective actions as needed.

Policy Development:

Develop and update Recreation Department policies and procedures to align with facility philosophy, professional standards, and federal and state regulations.

Budget Management:

Participate in the development and management of the department budget. Provide financial information to the Nursing Home Administrator as needed.

Staffing:

Hire, retain, and review TR staff performance to ensure they meet qualification and performance standards. Provide regular performance reviews and take necessary job actions to maintain a high-performing team.

Survey Process Participation:

Actively participate in long-term care survey processes, ensuring staff is informed and prepared. Address issues as they arise during the survey and collaborate with the Nursing Home Administrator to resolve any deficiencies.

Compliance & Safety:

Report injuries immediately and participate in fire and disaster drills. Ensure all emergency procedures are followed to maintain resident safety.

Continuing Education:

Stay current with industry knowledge through continuing education and apply new information to job responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or a related field is preferred.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or similar certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience in long-term care, geriatrics, or related fields.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations related to therapeutic recreation and long-term care facilities.

Job Type: Full-time

Expected schedule:

  • 8am-4pm, Monday-Friday
  • Every other weekend/holiday (common in other facilities)
  • Day off (potentially Friday/Monday) if working weekend

Experience:
